Tabacco Intervention
Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is committed to the health of patients and families. Tobacco use can lead to many health problems, including 15 different cancers. Quitting smoking is the most important thing a person can do to improve their health. The TIPS program is available for cancer patients, survivors, and their families.
TIPS Services
The TIPS program includes a range of evidence-based treatment options designed to meet the needs of patients, including:
- Individually-tailored in-person and telephone counseling
- 1. Establish a personalized quit plan
- 2. Education specific to cancer patients and survivors
- 3. Cognitive behavioral therapy
- 4. Understanding nicotine dependence and addiction
- 5. Motivational and behavioral support
- 6. Managing nicotine withdrawal
- 7. Coping skills training
- 8. Overcoming concerns about quitting
- 9. Gaining the freedom to enjoy a new lifestyle
- 10. Attention to psychosocial concerns (e.g., anxiety, fear, and depression)
- Federal Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cessation aids (e.g., nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline)
- Flexible follow-up through the cessation process
- Connections to other, evidence-based, smoking cessation resources (e.g., text messaging programs, mobile applications)
* Nicotine patches and gum are available at no-cost for patients unable to obtain these products through a prescription.

For cancer patients and survivors, quitting smoking has many benefits, such as:

* We encourage tobacco cessation as far in advance as possible before initiating cancer treatment.
Options for Family Support
The TIPS Program will also assist family members connect with free, publicly available tobacco cessation options, including the state Quitline, smokefree.gov (live chat, telephone counseling, text-messaging), and group or individual counseling.
